The Atari Dig

A documentary putting a 30-year pop culture legend to rest.

In 1983, Atari allegedly buried millions of unsold game copies of E.T.: The Extraterrestial for the 2600. Thirty years later, Fuel Entertainment found out if they’re really there, and documented their journey.

Fuel partnered with XBox Entertainment Studios, and the award-winning Simon and Jonathan Chinn of Lightbox to create a documentary film surrounding the myths, facts and exploration of this legend. At SXSW 2014, Fuel and the Chinns hosted a session to discuss the process, challenges and stories around planning and executing the first archaeological expedition of the gaming era.

On April 26th, 2014, hundreds of gamers and media came out to Alamogordo, New Mexico, and found out the truth behind the legend, as the cartridges were successfully unearthed.
